last year i began searching for cbd-dominant cannabis strains for my father as an alternative to his current pain management medications. after being disappointed by the lack of availability and inconsistent quality (when i could find it), i decided to purchase as many cbd strains as i could find in seed-form. my hope was to isolate a phenotype that was not only exceptionally high in cbd, but also desirable in appearance, smell and taste.

i acquired breeder seed packs of cannatonic, dieseltonic, harle tsu and canna tsu and grew them out taking care to ensure they all received the exact same regimen from nutrients to the watering pattern. i started a total of 42 seeds and ended up with 34 suitable phenotypes due to poor germination rates with the dieseltonic. at 4 weeks from seedling and while still in a vegetative stage of growth, i utilized san diego’s pharmlabs early leaf thc:cbd ratio detection testing on all of my cbd phenotypes. this enabled me to narrow my focus on the phenos that were highest in cbd before any of them reached the flowering stage. test results revealed that approximately half of the phenos were high in cbd, and two in particular out of that group (canna tsu #4 and dieseltonic #2) were very special; showing nearly double the cbd content of the others. i then completed the flowering cycle and sd pharmlabs tested the finished samples. i was looking to see if the cbd to thc ratio found in the early leaf detection test would remain consistent throughout the entire flower cycle. the test results showed that the group of cbd rich phenotypes finished with a very similar cbd to thc ratio to their corresponding early leaf tests. there were slight variances to the cbd to thc ratios, but they were relatively minor and didn't affect or alter the original ranking order of phenotypes (by cbd) from the initial test. after testing was fully completed, the canna tsu #4 finished highest in total cannabinoids, at 13.48% cbd, 8.09% thc. the dieseltonic finished at 13.39% cbd, 0.65% thc.

the canna tsu #4 was selected for further testing due to its elevated levels of cbd and tight flower structure. the next batch consisted of 10 canna tsu #4 s1's (original clone). i utilized san diego’s pharmlabs harvest optimization testing at 60, 65, and 70 days into flowering to gauge how the cbd levels developed over time. the results of that test revealed the ideal time to harvest in order to achieve the highest possible cbd level. the test demonstrated that the cbd level for this particular phenotype continued to elevate through day 60, until peaking at approximately 65 days into flowering at 15.23% cbd and 10.15% thc. the plants finished at a short compact size with perfect bud structure and powerful medicinal properties. the medicine has benefited my father greatly and i couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of this project. thanks to sd pharmlabs for all of their great help!
